Signature of an Agreement between the Prince's Government and Sant'Egidio in Support of Refugees

On Wednesday 30 May 2018, Gilles Tonelli, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Mr Cesare Zucconi, Secreteray General and Legal Representative of the Community of Sant'Egidio, signed a memorandum of understanding on the "Humanitarian Corridors" programme for hosting refugees in Italy, in particular refugees from Lebanon, which is a priority country for Monaco's Official Development Assistance program.

The contribution by the Prince's Government of EUR 500,000 will enable Sant'Egidio and its charity partners to continue supporting refugees for four years.

In particular, it relates to granting very vulnerable people (victims of torture or violence, families with children, single women, the elderly, the sick and people with disabilities) legal entry into Italian territory on the basis of admission on humanitarian grounds.

The programme covers all the conditions necessary for the reception and integration of refugees through support with housing, food, health, education and vocational training.

This collaboration with Sant'Egidio results from the Principality's special concern for migrants and refugees - "one of the smallest states in Europe, always attentive to respect for human rights and supporting those who are forced to leave their country because of war," stated Gilles Tonelli.

As a reminder, from 2015 to 2017, almost 80,000 refugees received direct support from Monaco's Official Development Assistance in the areas of health, food, education and employment.

In addition, in liaison with the French authorities and a Monegasque NGO, and under the aegis of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Principality is host to fifty or so refugee families in its own territory and in the immediate vicinity, ensuring them optimal conditions for integration.
