Sustainable Development
Monaco's international commitment to the Environment and Sustainable Development
Monaco commits to sustainable development through the RIO+20 objectives
Under the constant and active impetus of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Monegasque Government is implementing the Head of State's wish for Monaco to live up to the spirit of "Rio+20."
The United Nations General Assembly decided to hold a United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 – also known as "Rio+20."
Member States agreed on two topics – the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and the institutional framework for sustainable development.
The Monegasque Government's actions meet the sustainable development goals through various activities relating to development aid and international cooperation. In this context, and with specific emphasis on the environment, the areas of intervention are the fight against desertification and aid for reforestation, access to drinking water and sanitation, urban development that respects the environment and the protection of biodiversity.
In addition, many activities have been undertaken by the Monegasque Government with regard to promoting research and new environmental technologies, protecting the seas and oceans and, more generally, environment-related development cooperation, such as meeting commitments on carbon neutrality.
