The concrete commitment of a whole country behind H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco

Upon His accession to the throne, H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince traced out a pathway for a "model country". His commitment in the international arena to preserving our planet is reinforced at national level by the roadmap deployed with determination by the Prince's Government. The mobilisation of the Monegasque community and its different components, whether associations, entrepreneurs or private individuals, form part of this commitment.

The Prince's Government fosters the sustainable development of the Principality focusing its action on the preservation of biodiversity and resources, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and a policy in favour of a sustainable town. Modernising the Administration includes an eco-responsibility project that involves both civil servants and State officials.

The State services such as the Department of the Environment, the Department of Urban Planning or the Department of International Cooperation and many others, contribute every day, through their work of servicing the public, to implementing all or part of this sustainable development policy.

Among these missions is the implementation of many international conventions and agreements ratified by the Principality, such as the Kyoto Protocol.

The work of the Prince's Government to foster sustainable development is based on four pillars:

• Managing natural heritage
• Implementing a climate and energy plan
• A policy for a sustainable town 
• Mobilising the Monegasque community

This political will as regards sustainable development is expressed in the draft Environment Code, currently being examined by the National Council. This legislation will cover all areas related to the protection of nature and the environment, pollution, risks and nuisance and the enhancement of quality of life.

A Monegasque Environment Code

Beyond determination and daily activities, this undertaking needed to be enshrined in Monegasque law. Thus an Environment Code is currently being studied by the "Environment and Quality of Life" Commission of the National Council. The aim of this legislation can be summed up in a single sentence: "The right to a healthy environment".
