World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley opened the session by announcing that the WFP had recently declared a level 3 emergency in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger due to the deteriorating situation in these Sahel nations (all three are priority countries for Monaco’s Official Development Assistance). A strategic framework for resilience in the Sahel, covering the period through to 2023, is currently being developed to respond to the humanitarian issues affecting 20 million people in the region, who are facing unprecedented security challenges.

The WFP Executive Board approved the new Private Sector Partnerships and Fundraising Strategy (2020–2025), the Local and Regional Food Procurement Policy, the WFP Management Plan (2020–2022) and the country strategic plans (2020–2024) for Mali and Niger (priority countries for Monaco’s Official Development Assistance).

On the margins of the session, Yordanos Seium-Pasquier and Martine Garcia-Mascarenhas met the WFP’s Chief of Technical Assistance, Private Sector Partnership and Innovation, and the WFP Country Director for Burundi, where, since 2015, Monaco has been supporting a school meals programme that is set to run until 2020. The WFP’s new school feeding strategy for 2020–2030, which seeks to meet the needs of 73 million children aged 5 to 12 in 60 countries, will be launched in January 2020 (an integrated, multisectoral approach to protect schoolchildren’s nutrition, education and health).
