H.E. Mr. Robert Fillon, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the WFP, and Ms. Martine Garcia-Mascarenhas, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Monaco in Italy and Acting Deputy Representative to the FAO and the WFP, attended the 2nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP), held from 26 to 29 November in Rome.

The work of the session was opened by the WFP's Executive Director, David Beasley, who recalled the figures from the latest 2018 report on "The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World" - 821 million people are still suffering from hunger and more than 150 million children show stunted growth.  Mr. Beasley argued that the WFP should be a vehicle for cultural change, moving from a food aid approach to mechanisms for empowering the populations concerned.

The Executive Board of the WFP adopted its 2019-2021 management plan and work programme, as well as numerous country strategic plans (CSPs), including those relating to Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal.  These four countries benefit from the support of Monaco's Official Development Assistance (in the case of Mali, from 2019) with regard to multi-year programmes covering school canteens, the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, nutritional education and food fortification.

The Principality of Monaco made a declaration highlighting its commitment to food security, the fourth basic aspect of its development aid, the main multilateral partner of which is now the World Food Programme.
