The Air Quality Index (AQI)

Within the framework of the partnership between the Principality and AtmoSud , air quality in the Principality is expressed using an overall index from 0 (very good) to 100 (alert threshold), calculated on the basis of data collected by the 5 air quality measuring stations operated by the Department of the Environment.

The AQI forecast for the next day (D+1) is also estimated, taking weather forecasts into account.

 

Calculating the Air Quality Index

A calculation of this index is obtained by estimating the concentration of 3 pollutants: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), fine particulate matter (PM10) and ozone (O3). These pollutants are good indicators of the air pollution to which the population is exposed in urban areas.

For each pollutant, the calculation of a sub-index is undertaken, based on its own specific information thresholds [1] and alert thresholds [2]. The daily index is the maximum of these 3 sub-indexes.

The correspondence between the concentrations of pollutants (in micrograms) and the index is established as follows, bearing in mind that a value of 90 corresponds to the information threshold for one of the pollutants (O3NO2PM10 ) and a value of 100 corresponds to the alert threshold.

[1] Information threshold: concentration level above which information is relayed to the population.

[2] Alert threshold: concentration levels higher than the information thresholds, at which action to reduce pollution is taken.

 

Procedure for informing the public

The aim, as a priority, is to protect people who are the most sensitive to air pollution.

HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS

Vulnerable [3] or susceptible [ 4] populations should limit:

  • Travel on and around major roads during peak periods
  • Intense physical and sporting activities
  • Going out in the early afternoon, in the event of an episode of ozone pollution

With regard to the general population, it is not necessary for people to modify their usual activities.

[3] Vulnerable persons: pregnant women, infants and young children, people over 65 years of age, people with cardiovascular diseases, heart or respiratory failure and people with asthma.

[4] Susceptible persons: people who know that they are sensitive to pollution peaks and/or whose symptoms appear or worsen during pollution peaks.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Transport:

  • Choose non-polluting means of transport for short trips 

Activities:

  • Postpone maintenance or cleaning work that requires the use of solvents, paints or varnish

Heating:

  • Control the temperature in buildings (heating, air conditioning)

 

Public alert procedure

Aims to protect the entire population; at this level, stringent measure to reduce the emission of pollutants can be implemented.

HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS

Vulnerable or susceptible populations should limit:

  • Travel on and around major roads during peak periods
  • Intense physical and sporting activities
  • Going out in the early afternoon, in the event of an episode of ozone pollution

The general population should reduce intense physical and sporting activities. In the event of an ozone pollution incident, indoor activities can be continued.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Transport:

  • Limit the use of motor vehicles by using car sharing schemes and public transport
  • If possible, postpone any travel that can be rescheduled

Activities:

  • Postpone maintenance or cleaning work that requires the use of solvents, paints or varnish

Heating:

  • Control the temperature in buildings (heating, air conditioning)
