Monaco attends the 50th anniversary commemoration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm
On 2 and 3 June 2022, Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, attended the 50th anniversary commemoration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, on the theme “A healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”.
The historic Conference, which took place in Stockholm in 1972, led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It was seen as the first step in the development of international environmental law, highlighting the importance of a healthy environment for all.
Today’s commemorative meeting was an opportunity to review the progress made, and to look at ways of accelerating and strengthening actions to tackle the three-pronged planetary crisis posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution (chemical and plastic).
In her declaration, the Minister emphasised that scientific knowledge of the seas and oceans and their preservation are viewed as vitally important by the Principality, which has consistently backed calls for environmental law and multilateralism to be strengthened. She invited the participants to “build on the momentum of the Stockholm Declaration 50 years ago, and meet the planetary challenges for the survival and prosperity of future generations”.
