Youth workshops and courses (3 -18 years old) - Exhibition – 'Demain l’Océan?’ - Quai Antoine I Exhibition Hall – Monaco

To ensure that the ‘Demain l'Océan?’ exhibition is accessible to all, the Department of Cultural Affairs is organising thrilling tours and creative workshops for children of all ages.

This exhibition takes young visitors on a voyage across the seas and oceans, raising their awareness of marine conservation issues.

With various youth activities on offer, such as painting workshops, children will be able to unleash their creativity, spending an afternoon as artists, using the exhibition displays to inspire their mini artworks. 

The 'Demain l'Océan?' exhibition is not only a tribute to the ocean but also an effort to bridge the gap between art and the climate crisis, to raise public awareness of the threat posed to our marine environment by global warming.

The geography and topography of the Principality, nestled on the northern shore of the Mediterranean, Prince Albert I of Monaco's dedication to exploring, studying and protecting the oceans, and Prince Albert II of Monaco's continuation of this legacy through his namesake Foundation, make the Principality of Monaco the perfect setting for this exhibition.

With 71 pieces by 34 artists from five continents, the exhibition explores the complexity of humanity's current relationship with the marine world.

Workshop programme:

• For children aged 3-5:

-‘The ocean in colours’, Wednesdays from 4pm to 5pm

Using reproductions of paintings by Lucas Arruda, children will explore the colours of the ocean. There are felt-tip pens for drawing, shiny paper for making collages, and transparent materials to get creative with.

This workshop offers a visual experience of the ocean, an introduction to the concept of 'biodiversity', and the opportunity to listen to the soothing sounds of the sea.

• For children aged 6-9:

- ‘My painting of the sea’, Wednesdays from 2pm to 3pm

Inspired by the works of Claire Tabouret and Farah Atassi, children will create a drawing of a character staring out to sea. There will also be a discussion about the connection between people and the ocean, and the emotions that the sea can stir up.

- ‘A treasure hunt... for litter! ', Thursdays from 2pm to 3pm

An exploration game: children search for ‘treasure’ hidden in sensory bins (sand, paper, seaweed, etc.) and are challenged to figure out which are natural treasures, and which are man-made waste.

This workshop features an introduction to waste sorting, the importance of recycling, and an exploration of Malachi Farrell's artwork ‘Fish Flag Mourant.’

• For ages 10–14:

- ‘Mission: Ocean,’ Thursdays from 4pm to 5.30pm

Young artists, scientists, explorers, and activists will create a piece of art that addresses a critical ocean issue, such as endangered species, pollution, or melting ice caps.

There will also be a discussion about the works of Barthélémy Toguo and Malachi Farrell, along with a chance to create symbolic artworks: a drawing or collage depicting an endangered species, a polluted sea, or a poetic vision of the endangered ocean, using various mediums (drawing, painting, collage).

- ‘Art and the climate crisis', Fridays from 2pm to 3.30pm

Create a collage poster using archive photos, magazines and quotes taken from the exhibition labels.

Explore the links between art and ecology through a discussion on possible conservation measures.

• For ages 14–18:

- 'The role of an Ocean Guardian', on Fridays from 4pm to 5.30pm

Create an abstract painting in the style of an artist or as a representation of the participants' perception of the ocean.

The exhibition runs until 7 September 2025 (free admission).

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 1pm to 7pm - Closed on Mondays.

 The workshops are limited to 10 participants.
