World Wildlife Day
World Wildlife Day and the fiftieth anniversary of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) will be celebrated on 3 March under the theme “Partnerships for wildlife conservation”.
The purpose of this day is to highlight the importance of protecting species of wildlife that are vital to the survival of humanity.
With a strong commitment on the international stage to safeguarding biodiversity and protecting endangered species, the Prince’s Government, represented by the Department of the Environment, takes part in the updating of the CITES Appendices, which determine the level of protection for endangered wildlife species.*
In Monaco, the Department of the Environment, as the managing body for CITES implementation, oversees every commercial transaction involving a species listed in the CITES Appendices and issues the documents required to ensure safe management of the trade in animal species and derived products.
* The most recent CITES Conference of the Parties was held in Panama in November 2022 (COP19)
