World Wildlife Day
The 68th United Nations General Assembly (20 December 2013) declared 3 March to be World Wildlife Day.
The date 3 March was chosen as it was the date on which the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also known as CITES, was signed. For 2017, the theme for World Wildlife Day is “Listen to the young voices”. Given that a quarter of the world’s population is aged between 10 and 24, efforts to raise awareness must focus precisely on these young people.
In September 2016, the 17th Conference of the Parties to CITES in Johannesburg adopted the Convention’s first resolution on youth engagement, calling on the parties to engage and involve young people in wildlife conservation issues.
To mark World Wildlife Day, Valérie Davenet, Director of the Department of the Environment, highlights how important it is for everyone to get involved: “In addition to young people, who represent our future and who are already extremely aware of the challenges of wildlife conservation, we need to draw the attention of everyone to the consequences of our choices in terms of consumption and leisure activities. For our choices have an impact on the preservation of fauna and flora at both the local and international levels.”
It is also worth noting that the Department of the Environment has recently published a leaflet presenting CITES, which explains its role in and commitment to protecting biodiversity. The leaflet is available on the Prince’s Government website: http://en.gouv.mc/Publications .
