The Department of the Environment will host a morning biodiversity visit on 28 February 2024
The cliffs overlooking the Port of Fontvieille are one of the region’s most biodiverse sectors, both in terms of regular and heritage species.
Due to the size and range of these cliffs, a wide variety of ecosystems and plant communities formed, resulting in the development of surprising animal species. Well exposed and little frequented by humans, this natural environment allows wildlife to reproduce without being disturbed.
Among the remarkable species that can be seen here are the peregrine falcon, common kingfisher and a colony of Mediterranean shags.
As part of its remit to monitor and raise awareness about local bird populations, the Department of the Environment will host a morning information session on Wednesday 28 February 2024.
For the first part of the session, participants will use binoculars to view the bird species from the bottom of the cliff. The second part will involve viewing Mediterranean shag nesting sites from a boat belonging to the Department of Maritime Affairs.
The event is an opportunity to speak about these bird species with members of the Department of the Environment and an ornithologist from the CEN-PACA (a regional association which seeks to protect natural areas in Provence, the Alps and the Côte d’Azur). Participants will also be able to learn non-disruptive bird-watching techniques.
The event can host up to 15 people (all ages). Binoculars are provided but participants can also bring their own equipment.
To book a spot, please email the Department of the Environment environnement@gouv.mc or call during the week: (+377) 98 98 83 41. The Department will provide the time and place of the meeting.
