RAMOGE and the AIEA Improved Monitoring of Microalgae

As part of Monaco Ocean Week, the RAMOGE Agreement and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are joining forces to improve the monitoring and management of blooms of harmful benthic microalgae.

The overall functioning and structure of marine ecosystems are strongly conditioned by the behaviour of the first levels of the food chain, and in particular by microalgae that develop in the water column and on hard sediments and substrates in shallow coastal environments.

This issue affects many countries around the world and is part of the United Nations Goal 14 (sustainable development) "to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources."

During Monaco Ocean Week, the RAMOGE Agreement and the IAEA are organising training at the Oceanographic Museum from Monday 9 to Thursday 12 April 2018 for scientists and environmental managers from the African, Asia-Pacific, Latin American, Caribbean and European regions.  This workshop will enable them to increase their knowledge of monitoring blooms of harmful microalgae.  Members of the Agreement will speak on their expertise in monitoring Ostreopsis ovata, microalgae that has been present in the RAMOGE zone for approximately 15 years.

On Thursday 12 April, a conference, which is open to the public, (registration required), will be an opportunity to present the prospects for managing harmful benthic microalgae at the regional and global levels.

To take part, register with the RAMOGE Agreement's Secretariat (contact@ramoge.org - tel. +377 98 98 42 29).
