On Thursday 9 May, Monaco Scientific Centre (CSM) and the Association of Friends of the CSM held a lecture at Monaco's Vocational and Catering School (Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monaco) on the subject of "Return from a Mission in Antarctica."

Drs. Céline Le Bohec, Biologist and CNRS Research Officer, Victor Planas-Bielsa, Mathematician and CSM Research Officer and Yvon Le Maho, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS and member of the Academy of Sciences (and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Paul-Emile Victor Institute) gave a presentation on their work, innovative techniques that have been developed to study penguin populations, and life at the research station in Antarctica.

Every year, researchers from the CSM's Polar Biology Department undertake missions to Antarctica in partnership with the CNRS and the French and German Polar Institutes.  The data collected in the field are used to help protect penguins, in particular by establishing marine protected areas, and consequently to preserve biodiversity and the polar ecosystems.

This lecture was also an opportunity to present the Association of Friends of the CSM, whose objective is to promote scientific culture in the Principality by holding regular scientific events and support the research undertaken at the CSM.
