Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development supports eco-friendly development policy
As the tourist season gets underway in the Principality, the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development has reaffirmed its support for the eco-friendly aspects of its policy and is sharing its views on protecting the environment and marine ecosystems, with new ideas, innovations and plans for the future.
Although 99% of the Principality’s coastline is artificial, the Prince’s Government aims to strike a balance between limiting the environmental impact of construction work and tourism, and contributing to the Principality’s economic growth and attractiveness.
Among the measures announced, several are already being implemented, such as the sustainable cruise policy introduced in conjunction with SEPM, which limits the size of cruise ships making ports of call. These ships will also be subjected to strengthened regulatory and environmental controls. New tools for protecting marine biodiversity – tide pools and biohuts – have been installed in Monaco’s ports, and a white paper on tourism has been given wide reach thanks to enhanced action by the CSR Unit at the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority.
Looking ahead, a guide to eco-design aimed at maritime facilities operators is currently being finalised and a review is underway to consider the creation of a regulated mooring area which would accommodate yacht owners under conditions that would ensure conservation of the seabed.
These measures were presented at a breakfast conference on the theme “Sustainable Urban Development Policy: marine and maritime challenges”, held by the Junior Chamber International Monaco on 18 April at the Méridien Beach Plaza Hotel.
