Saturday 13 October 2018 – World Migratory Bird Day "Uniting Our Voices for Bird Conservation"
The convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) invite you to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD).
These two international agreements, to which the Principality is a Party, point out that the year 2018 marks a new beginning for World Migratory Bird Day. From now on, it is bringing the world's main bird migration corridors together, namely the African-Eurasian, East Asian/Australasian and American migration routes. Two days have been chosen for the event: every 2nd Saturday in May and October, i.e. Saturday 13 October 2018 and Saturday 11 May 2019.
In Monaco, inventories of avifauna undertaken by the Department of the Environment have revealed the presence of some remarkable species, including migratory birds that make stopovers in the Principality.
By definition, a migratory species moves from one habitat to another twice a year during the prenuptial (spring) and postnuptial (autumn) migrations, and staging can be made. There are also partial migrations. such as transhumance from the mountains to the lowlands, depending on the season.
"Migratory species make a significant effort. They are fragile and play an important role in global and local biodiversity. As "natural insecticides," they also help to keep insect populations under control. Consequently, they must be protected, as must the sites they have chosen," recalled Valérie Davenet, Director of the Environment.
Monaco has various migration sites and, depending on the season, it is possible to observe Great Cormorants, Swifts, Swallows, Blackcaps, common Robins, Black-Winged Stilt, and many more ...
