The 3rd Meeting of the Signatories (MoS3) to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, was closed today by the meeting’s chair Robert Calcagno, CEO of the Oceanographic Institute, Albert I, Prince of Monaco Foundation. Isabelle Rosabrunetto, the Ministry’s Director General, was in attendance.

In his speech, Mr Calcagno hailed the success of the meeting, highlighting “the constructive spirit in which the work took place and the commitment of all to protecting sharks, the ancient masters of the oceans that now find themselves in a precarious position. This Memorandum of Understanding may not be legally binding, but it is nonetheless highly relevant and active.”

He also welcomed the compromise reached between the United States, the European Union and Monaco, following a proposal put forward by the Principality, to add the angel shark (Squatina squatina) to the list of protected species.

Seven other species were added to the list in the Memorandum of Understanding, meaning that they should benefit from increased joint efforts on the part of the international community to improve conservation.

The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks falls under the aegis of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
