Quai des Etats-Unis – Reconstruction Work
The Quai des Etats-Unis borders the Northern part of Port Hercule, for a length of approximately 370 metres, between the North Sea Wall (to the East) and the Northern Dock (to the West). It is made of a concrete slab built between 1968 and 1975, which rests on massive piles dating from 1910.
The concrete slab of the quay has deteriorated significantly, due to corrosion of the reinforcements. It is temporarily supported by a complex of piles and metal beams, but is not repairable, and must therefore be demolished and rebuilt. Once the existing concrete slab has been demolished and the piles carefully sawn up, the quay will be rebuilt in its current form using prefabricated caissons placed on piles.
These 30 caissons in reinforced concrete, measuring approximately 12.5m x 12.5m x 3.55m high, are being constructed in Saint Mandrier and taken to Monaco by flotation. They will include a waterproof technical area, which will make it possible to improve and modernise the boat supply networks. They will also contain equipment that will enable wastewater from the boats to be collected and storm water to be treated.
The project will be undertaken in three phases, over three years, during the period between the Monaco Yacht Show and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The first phase, which is just starting, will be completed at the end of March 2017. It concerns the part of the quay between the chicane of the F1 Grand Prix and the North Sea Wall.
