Monegasque delegation participates in United Nations initiative: “High-Level Dialogue on the Early Warnings For All” and announces financial support from the Prince’s Government

On Monday 22 May 2023 in Geneva, a Monegasque delegation took part in a high-level dialogue on the United Nations initiative to create early warning systems for all. Launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2022, this initiative aims to ensure that everyone on Earth is protected by an early warning system within the next five years. This ambitious target is in line with efforts to adapt to climate change, as the latest IPCC report* confirms the acceleration and intensification of extreme weather events.

The event opened the 19th session of the World Meteorological Congress held from 22 May to 2 June 2023. The World Meteorological Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations dedicated to the standardisation and international exchange of meteorological measurements and data for the purposes of monitoring and forecasting.

At the dialogue, H.E. Ms Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva, announced that the Prince’s Government would provide support for the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) initiative for the next four years (2024-2027).

CREWS works to develop early warning systems in Least Developed Countries (LDC) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The mechanism is implemented by three operational partners: the World Meteorological Organization, the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Principality has contributed a steadily increasing amount of international climate funding since 2015, focused on adaptation projects for the most vulnerable populations. This new contribution reinforces the Government’s efforts in favour of official development assistance.
