UN – Monaco Attends the 41st Session of the FAO's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean
From 16 to 20 October 2017, the Principality of Monaco took part, as a member of the FAO*, in the work of the 41st Session of the FAO's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).
As the start of the work coincided with World Food Day (16 October), the President of the GFCM recalled the importance of conserving products from the sea and the oceans, which contribute to food security and nutrition throughout the world.
In response to this need, the Commission adopted the First Regional Action Plan, the aim of which is to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, as well as a new Strategy for the sustainable development of aquaculture, in line with Malta's Ministerial Declaration, MedFish4Ever, signed by the Principality of Monaco on 31 May 2017.
The Prince's Government, which is committed to supporting the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, in particular in response to Sustainable Development Goal No. 14, "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development," signed a three-year 2017-2019 Agreement with the GFCM to "Promote the sustainable development of fisheries by combating unreported and unregulated illegal fishing in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea."
