The Principality of Monaco has joined the group of countries working to negotiate an ambitious international treaty based on a comprehensive and circular approach that will ensure effective interventions throughout the full lifecycle of plastics. The aim is to prevent any “leakage” into the environment.

Around 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic waste have been produced since 1950. Less than 10% of this waste has been recycled, 14% has been incinerated and 76% has ended up in landfill or been released into the environment.

Ms Isabelle BERRO-AMADEI, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, took the opportunity to highlight that “plastic pollution is a global crisis which impacts biodiversity, climate and human health”. She stressed that “without new and effective measures to control it, plastic production is set to double over the next 20 years, and the amount of plastic waste dumped into the oceans will triple by 2040. This is an unacceptable burden on future generations.”

Ahead of the negotiations that will begin in Uruguay in late November under the aegis of the United Nations, the group of countries met on 22 September at the offices of the World Economic Forum and called for a unified approach to tackle sources of plastic pollution, first by limiting the production and use of plastics, and second by focusing on the manufacture of more sustainable products.
