Monaco renews its investment to save iconic marine species
Monaco welcomed the Seahorse, Pipefish & Seadragon Specialist Group (SPS SG) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) from 25 to 28 November 2024. This international network of scientists is dedicated to the conservation of these vulnerable marine species, often threatened by habitat destruction due to overfishing and illegal trade.
Invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, 43 experts from 23 countries travelled to Monaco for a first in-person meeting.
This event is part of Monaco’s efforts to conserve seahorses and other vulnerable marine species in cooperation with international projects such as the “Seahorse Project”, led by Dr Amanda Vincent, a key figure and pioneer in seahorse research.
Discussions during the event were an opportunity to strengthen ties between the various members of the specialist group and develop strategies and new initiatives aimed at promoting scientific research and awareness about these emblematic species in marine ecosystems.
In keeping with its commitment to the environment, Monaco offered an ideal platform on which to federate international experts and provide a springboard for tangible measures.
