The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation recently signed an agreement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) to promote women’s empowerment and ensure sustainable and inclusive industrial development in Tunisia.

Monaco has been a member of the UfM since 2008 and of UNIDO since 2003. At the instigation of its royal family, the Principality of Monaco has long pursued a policy that supports women’s rights. In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), actions are undertaken in many areas, including socio-economic integration.

The aim of this agreement, which is set to last for four years, is to promote the development of micro, small and medium-sized companies led by women, in a bid to create more business opportunities and jobs for working-age women in Tunisia.

The pilot project supported by Monaco focuses specifically on women-led companies developing cosmetic and parapharmaceutical products using natural ingredients. In Tunisia, this covers essential oils, floral waters, and aromatic and medicinal plants, as well as perfumes, creams, masks and soaps.

The project is part of a broader initiative aiming to empower women living in rural and urban areas of the Middle East and North Africa.

Through its Department of International Cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has maintained a strong collaborative relationship with Tunisia since the early 1990s. Monaco’s Cooperation for Development team will be following this women’s entrepreneurship initiative with great interest.
