Monaco participates in the Commission for Social Development on the theme of poverty
The Permanent Mission of the Principality of Monaco to the United Nations in New York took part in the 62nd session of the Commission for Social Development, which was held from 5 to 14 February 2024 on the theme of eliminating poverty.
Highlighting the pledges made at the Summit on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, that of eliminating poverty and reducing inequalities*, Second Secretary, Ms Alyson Calem-Sangiorgio, joined the general debate by underlining the importance of education and health as priorities for the Principality, both nationally and internationally. Most notably, she highlighted the increase in its Official Development Assistance (ODA) and the work of the Monaco Collectif Humanitaire in Africa.
She also pointed out that sport is a factor in social development which can help lift people out of poverty, a point made by the Monegasque delegation in the resolution on the Commission's priority theme, which has been maintained for the last two years.
*Preambular paragraph 27 of resolution E/CN.5/2024/L.4: " Recognizing that sport is an enabler of social development and can be used as a means to access quality education and decent work, promote healthy lifestyles and well-being, reinforce solidarity and social cohesion, fight social exclusion and stereotypes and create economic opportunities for all, which can contribute to lifting people out of poverty."
