Monaco takes part in 7th Our Ocean Conference
At the invitation of Mr Surangel Whipps Jr, President of the Republic of Palau, and Mr John Forbes Kerry, President Joe Biden’s Special Envoy for Climate, Ms Céline Caron-Dagioni, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, accompanied by Mr Tidiani Couma, Secretary for External Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, visited Koror (Palau) to represent H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince at the 7th Our Ocean Conference, held on 13 and 14 April.1
The Our Ocean Conference is an informal event that was launched in 2014 by Mr John F. Kerry, who was then the US Secretary of State, with a view to securing specific commitments for sustainable management of the global ocean.
Work at the conference in Koror focused on six major themes: marine protected areas, climate change, sustainable fisheries, the blue economy, marine pollution and maritime safety. It resulted in the announcement or confirmation of 410 commitments totalling USD 16.35 billion, including significant contributions from Monaco split between the six areas of action.
1 - The Koror conference follows on from events held at the US State Department in Washington in 2014 and 2016; in Valparaiso (Chile) in 2015; in Malta in 2017; in Bali in 2018; and in Oslo in 2019.
