As Marie-Pierre Gramaglia this morning reiterated the importance of marking World Environment Day 2020, the theme for which is “Biodiversity: a call to action to combat the accelerated loss of species and the degradation of the natural world”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Laurent Anselmi endorsed, on behalf of Monaco, the appeal launched by Costa Rica and France as part of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People.2

The appeal highlights the close links between the COVID-19 pandemic and biodiversity loss: “The rapid and devastating spread of COVID-19 is a tragedy. Its impacts on people, economies and societies are staggering and will persist for years. The pandemic offers powerful and unprecedented evidence that nature and humanity share the same destiny and are more closely linked than most of us realise.”

It is therefore essential to effectively safeguard and restore biodiversity. These actions are “a crucial step in helping to prevent future pandemics and public health emergencies, and to lay the foundations of a sustainable global economy.”

All governments around the world are called on to conserve “our precious, intact ecosystems and wilderness areas, and to protect and effectively manage at least 30% of the planet – land and sea – by 2030.”

By joining this initiative, Monaco is stepping up its actions to safeguard biodiversity at the international level, consistent with the actions being taken inside the country.

2 The High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People is an intergovernmental group established to advocate for protection of at least 30 percent of the planet – land and sea – by 2030, in accordance with scientific opinion. This objective should promote indigenous-led conservation, prioritise intact ecosystems and focus on areas most important for biodiversity and the climate. The resulting network of conserved areas should be ecologically representative, well-connected, and help to maintain species diversity and abundance.
