On Tuesday 1 October, start-up incubator MonacoTech hosted two highly regarded “colleagues”, Mathias Pastor and Oussama Ammar, directors of The Family, for a day of discussions and presentations.

Established in 2013, The Family is a pan-European company that provides support and services to the start-ups in its portfolio in return for a share of their capital. As Oussama Ammar, the company’s cofounder and director, explains: “our purpose is to acquire and retain a share in companies; our role is to educate, support and protect.”

Over the last six years, The Family has supported almost 600 start-ups, of which 275 are still active and 10 have already grown to be worth more than €100 million.

At the initiative of MonacoTech Director Fabrice Marquet, the morning was devoted to a discussion between Mathias Pastor and a panel of entrepreneurs including, naturally, the MonacoTech startups, as well as students from the Principality, who were interested in working with him to identify common mistakes that all business creators make in the first, decisive phase of their entrepreneurial journey.

To close the day, it was over to Oussama Ammar to present his vision based on the experience of The Family to a more institutional and business-focused audience featuring leading figures such as Frédéric Genta, Country Chief Digital Officer.

Oussama Ammar focused particularly on the vocation of the entrepreneur: “It is important to recognise certain truths. Entrepreneurs often exist because they have no choice other than to create something in order to keep going, always carried forward by the winds of freedom. Their primary quality is that they rebel against the status quo of society in general. This has always been the case; the difference today lies in the speed of this development, which creates a shock – Uber, for example. Finally, the relationship with money has changed. It is becoming more complicated because everything is becoming cheaper and cheaper to create, but proving harder and harder to launch.”
