Monaco Takes Part in the Meeting of UN Rome-Based Agencies (RBAs)
On 14 September 2018, the Embassy of Monaco in Italy took part in the joint annual meeting of the FAO Council and the Executive Boards of the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the three United Nations agencies that are responsible for eradicating hunger.
In response to the reform by the UN Secretary-General, which aims to reduce the gap between humanitarian and development aid, a five-year Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the three agencies on 6 June, the date of its entry into force. The aim of this Memorandum is to strengthen collaboration between the three Agencies, at the global, regional and national levels, and help countries achieve their sustainable development goals, in particular Goal No. 2, "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture."
A presentation was given at this meeting on the regional approach in the Sahel in response to an alarming situation of food and nutritional insecurity that is affecting 16 million people, caused in particular by the effects of climate change.
Monaco's Official Development Assistance authorities, in partnership with the WFP, are supporting a food fortification programme in Niger, within the framework of the 3N Initiative "Nigeriens Nourishing Nigeriens," launched by the President of the Republic of the Niger, the aim of which is to make the livelihoods of populations affected by food crises and/or natural disasters sustainable and improve preventative measures.
