Monegasque delegation takes part in the 53rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council and contributes to two panel discussions
A Monegasque delegation led by H.E. Ms Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva, is taking part in the 53rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held in Geneva until 14 July 2023.
The Council is reviewing issues relating to the promotion and protection of human rights, such as discrimination against women and girls, the right to education, and the role of the media in safeguarding the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
The Council is also addressing the worrying human rights situation in certain countries such as Syria, Eritrea, Iran and Myanmar.
The Principality shared its views during two panel discussions:
During the annual full-day discussion on the human rights of women (30 June 2023), focused on gender-based violence against women and girls in public and political life, H.E. Ms. Carole Lanteri spoke about the situation in the Principality in this regard, noting in particular the large percentage of management positions in the civil service that are held by women.
During the annual panel discussion on the adverse impacts of climate change on human rights (3 July 2023), the Monegasque delegation took part in discussions underscoring the close ties between climate change and food insecurity, as established by the latest IPCC report. The delegation also highlighted the cooperation between the Prince’s Government and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in these areas.
The Human Rights Council, a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, is the primary UN organisation with competence in the field of promoting and protecting human rights. It is headquartered in Geneva.
