From 10–14 June, the Principality of Monaco participated, as an observer, in the work of the 175th session of the Council of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

This session provided a forum for in-depth discussions on critical issues in a context of an increasing number of global crises and international conflicts. It was also an opportunity to examine various questions related to governance.

It was marked by the adoption by consensus of a decision regarding the situation in Gaza, where ongoing conflict and restricted access to this area have caused massive destruction of the agricultural sector and high levels of food insecurity. By highlighting the Food for Gaza Initiative led by the Italian government with FAO and the World Food Programme, this decision provides specific guidance to FAO to continue providing technical assistance and prepare reconstruction efforts.

In a follow-up to previous sessions, the Council also adopted a decision on the impact of the war in Ukraine, calling upon FAO to continue its efforts in this country and to cooperate with the bodies responsible for the Register of Damage for Ukraine by providing information about damage to the Ukrainian farming sector.

While at this event, the Principality declared its support for several statements issued by the European Union on issues relating to the state of food and agriculture around the world and the current and future activities of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

The FAO Council has 49 members and serves as the Organisation’s executive body.
