H.E. Mr Christophe Steiner, Ambassador, Personal Representative of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince to the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), travelled to Djerba (Tunisia) from 18 to 20 November 2022 to attend the 43rd Ministerial Conference of the Francophonie and the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the French-speaking countries.

The Djerba Summit, whose theme was “Connectivity in diversity: digital technology as a vector for development and solidarity in the French-speaking world”, saw representatives of francophone States and Governments agree on the vital need to promote the French language, by creating and publishing informative, scientific, and cultural online content, particularly aimed at young people, who are a priority for the OIF.

In his speech, H.E. Mr Christophe Steiner hailed the adoption of key policies and statements for the future of the Francophonie, namely the Declaration on the French Language, the rules governing the procedure for joining the Organisation, and the Strategic Framework of the Francophonie for the period 2023-2030, in line with the objectives set at the 36th Ministerial Conference held in Monaco in 2019.

The Summit concluded with the re-election of H.E. Ms Louise Mushikiwabo as Secretary-General of the OIF, following a first four-year term that drew unanimous praise from the organisation’s member States and Governments.

Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, had previously expressed the support of the Principality of Monaco for Ms Louise Mushikiwabo’s candidacy at the Ministerial Conference held on 6 October 2022, and that endorsement was reiterated by the Ambassador in his speech.

At the close of the event, it was announced that the next Summit of the Francophonie will take place in Villers-Cotterêts, France, in 2024.
