United Nations: Monaco reviewed by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
On 28-29 November, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) of the United Nations reviewed Monaco’s policies on racial discrimination, based on a report submitted by the Principality on the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
A Monegasque delegation travelled to the headquarters of the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner to submit the report and answer questions from experts on the Committee. The delegation was led by H.E. Ms Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Monaco to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva and composed of representatives of the relevant ministries and the Department of Justice.
During the discussions, members of the delegation provided details of the measures taken by the Principality to prevent, address, and where necessary, punish discriminatory behaviour, based on race or other factors, as well as the assistance provided to victims of such behaviour. Certain Monegasque practices with regard to access to employment, education or social assistance were also explained.
Following the review, the CERD will publish its conclusions and recommendations, some of which will be subject to follow-up procedures.
The CERD is a body of independent experts, established by the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination of 21 December 1964 and tasked with monitoring the provisions of this text by the States parties. The Principality ratified this Convention in 1995.
