Two ministers pay visit to Monaco Scientific Centre

Health and Social Affairs Didier Gamerdinger today visited the Paediatric Cancer Research Group, which is part of the Mechanisms of Resistance to Targeted Therapies Team within the Medical Biology Department at Monaco Scientific Centre.

The ministers were greeted by Professor Patrick Rampal, Chairman of the Centre’s Board of Directors, and Professor Denis Allemand, the Scientific Director, and had an opportunity to learn about the work carried out by Dr Vincent Picco, a research fellow at the Centre, Dr Gilles Pagès, Director of the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and Mechanisms of Resistance to Targeted Therapies Team Leader, and their colleagues.

With support from the Flavien Foundation, the team has taken on the twofold challenge of attempting to identify treatments that are both less toxic and yet more effective than current treatments for the most common paediatric brain cancers, known as medulloblastomas. The initial results of their work were recently published in the Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine.

Professor Patrick Rampal took advantage of the visit to remind people that childhood cancers are thankfully rare but sadly tragic. They have benefitted more than any other type of cancer from progress in medical research, with five-year survival rates rising from 60% to more than 80% in 20 years. It is therefore essential to continue to develop cancer research: only a better understanding of the disease will improve these results still further.

International Childhood Cancer Day will conclude with the Flavien Foundation walk, which departs from Place du Palais at 6 pm. Both Didier Gamerdinger and Patrice Cellario will take part.
