Principality of Monaco signs partnership with R&D institute Efficacity

The Mission for Energy Transition recently signed a partnership with the research and development institute Efficacity. Established in 2014 under the aegis of the Investments for the Future Programme (PIA) supported by the French Government, the institute is dedicated to urban energy and environmental transition. It brings together around 30 stakeholders from all backgrounds – the public and private sectors, industry and academia – with more than 100 researchers and experts collaborating to develop and implement innovative solutions to build the city of tomorrow: an energy-efficient and ultra-low carbon city.

Based on diagnostics and modelling, “land-use development” scenarios will be designed in the Principality through meetings and workshops with relevant stakeholders. These scenarios will integrate the objectives and schedule set out in Monaco’s energy transition strategy and incorporate actions to improve energy efficiency that are specific to each district studied. All of the scenarios selected for “areas with potential” will be modelled to evaluate their impacts, using appropriate indicators (consumption in kWh and associated CO2 emissions, etc.).

The partnership between the Mission for Energy Transition and Efficacity will begin with Fontvieille district, but the intention is that it will continue over a number of years, rolling out the method and tool to other districts in the Principality,” explained Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux, Director of the Mission for Energy Transition, adding: “This support will enable the Principality to identify the best approaches and projects to achieve the ambitious targets that it has set for itself. We’ll be able to tell you more in the autumn!

A partnership, a shared vision :

Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development: “I welcome this research and development partnership, which will help to accelerate the country’s energy transition. It will provide the Mission for Energy Transition with the tools that will support an even more detailed understanding of the energy challenges we face. This initiative will contribute to thinking on future investment in building and energy systems, based on a scientific study carried out by the teams at Efficacity. Due to its size, Monaco is an innovative country that is highly suited to energy transition studies of this kind. I believe that it is essential that we equip ourselves with cutting-edge technical and scientific resources to develop appropriate energy strategies and implement them quickly.

Michel Salem-Sermanet, CEO of Efficacity: “This partnership with Monaco represents the intersection of two great ambitions. The Principality’s ambition, led by the Mission for Energy Transition, and Efficacity’s ambition, to engage in long-term collaboration with areas that want to experiment with new approaches – here, the use of an energy modelling and simulation tool at district level to support decision-making on the best local energy strategies. We have no doubt that this partnership will demonstrate the operational value-added of these advanced simulation and decision-making tools, and that they will be rapidly deployed more widely across Europe. There’s a lot at stake: optimising the energy strategy of every urban project is the only way to truly step up low-carbon transition in cities.
