Press Release

Following the announcement by the cashiers’ union of the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) of its intention to go on strike during the Formula 1 Grand Prix event, the Government supports the position of SBM’s management as stated in its press release and encourages representatives of this union to opt for dialogue rather than action that goes against the interests of the majority of employees.

The Prince’s Government wishes to ensure social equality and remains at all times attentive to the demands of employers’ associations and trade unions in the Principality.

As always, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is available at all times to assist both employers and employees with their legitimate discussions and help them reach fair and balanced agreements.

Regarding the demands expressed by the leaders of this union, no information has been brought to the attention of Government services that would confirm the allegations of discrimination against women and/or Monegasques at the Société des Bains de Mer. Furthermore, average salaries paid at the Société des Bains de Mer are much higher than those paid in the same sector in the neighbouring economic region. Contractual benefits granted by the SBM to its employees are far superior to the average and are regularly cited as an example by representatives of the Monaco Union of Trade Unions.

The Government can only lament the practice, adopted in recent years by the Monaco Union of Trade Unions, of using major national events such as the Grand Prix season as a means of pressure and to the detriment of consultation. Everyone knows these events generate significant economic benefits for the employers and employees of several sectors of activity in the Principality.

This attitude is a disservice to the vast majority of employees who work hard every day to make these events a success.

Services at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs reconfirm their availability to help the SBM management team and trade union representatives continue discussions if necessary.
