Since Sunday 13 May 2018, the day after the last Ligue 1 home fixture, significant work has been underway at Louis II Stadium to renovate the football pitch.

The work, due to be completed on Friday 10 August, has been carried out in two phases in order to avoid interfering with the Herculis EBS international athletics meeting held on the evening of 20 July 2018.

During the first phase, from 13 May to Friday 6 July, the organic substrate and the irrigation system were completely removed from the entire playing area in order to access the slab underneath and fully restore its waterproofing.

Once this had been completed, the work involved installing:

a new pitch drainage network including a continuous drainage layer

  • a new automatic pitch irrigation system
  • a heating system to promote the growth of natural grass

During the second phase of work, which began on 23 July, natural turf was laid. A fertiliser made of organic and plant matter first had to be spread over the entire area and mixed with the new substrate. The new grass was laid on the surface between 7 and 9 August, leaving Louis II Stadium all set for the return of the Ligue 1 football championship with a match against Lille OSC on 18 August.
