H.E. Ms Marie-Pascale Boisson, Monaco’s designated Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, took part in the 2nd United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference in Beijing from 14 to 16 October 2021.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Laurent Anselmi also delivered a message to the conference, which was broadcast during the plenary session alongside those from heads of state and ministers from all over the world.

The Minister reiterated the targets that the Principality has set to combat climate change and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, noting the many actions that have been taken at the national level. He highlighted the fact that the symbolic threshold of 10% of vehicles registered in Monaco being electric or hybrid vehicles had recently been reached.

At the behest of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, Monaco advocates tirelessly within international bodies for less carbon-intensive road, maritime and air transport.

The first global sustainable transport conference was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2016. This year’s conference was held at a critical moment, just a little over two weeks ahead of COP 26 in Glasgow, where the world will address the climate emergency.

Today, transport accounts for nearly a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to its contribution to global warming, the pollution generated by transport is a leading cause of mortality around the world.

The conference concluded with the adoption of the Beijing Declaration.
