On 19 October 2022, H.E. Mr Lorenzo Ravano, the Principality of Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the International Organisations in Vienna, presented his credentials to Mr Gerd Müller, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

During their subsequent discussions, Mr Müller highlighted the importance of promoting the development of low-carbon industry as a means of reconciling industrial development and the fight against climate change. He also welcomed the ambitious targets achieved by Monaco, which he described as a role model in this area.

H.E. Mr Lorenzo Ravano reiterated the Principality’s full support for UNIDO’s work, including through the Prince’s Government’s co-funding of a programme to strengthen women’s empowerment in Tunisia. The programme, which is being implemented by UNIDO in partnership with the Union for the Mediterranean, aims to promote the development of micro, small and medium businesses led by women to create more business opportunities and jobs for women in Tunisia.

The Ambassador also highlighted the Principality’s tradition of and capacity for innovation, its expertise in heat pump technology and its strategy of investing in the renewable energy sector in a bid to help meet carbon neutrality targets.

Established in 1966, UNIDO’s role is to promote and accelerate inclusive, sustainable industrial development in Member States, and to advise and support developing countries to devise industrial policies, create new industries or improve existing ones. Monaco has been a member of the organisation since 2003.
