Didier Gamerdinger visits staff at Plati Centre, a medical psychology service for children and teens
Operating under the supervision of the Department of Health Affairs, the Plati Centre provides care for children who are resident or attending school in the Principality and are suffering from psychological problems or learning difficulties.
The Plati Centre is made up of three units:
- the Medical Psychology Centre (CMP)
- the Day Therapy Activities Centre (CATTP)
- the Learning Difficulties Assessment Centre (CDTA)
Child psychiatrist Dr Filippo Giulioni leads the CMP, whose mission is to support children suffering from psychological problems. With a team of 12, the CMP offers children individual treatment with a therapist. Some 333 children and teenagers receive tailored support from the unit’s professionals.
The CATTP and CDTA are led by child psychiatrist Dr Marcelline Renaud-Yang. The units support 200 children a year, referred by a school doctor, general practitioner or Princess Grace Hospital.
The CATTP comprises a multidisciplinary team of 11 staff, and offers patients group therapy with other young people.
Established in late 2012, the CDTA now has 28 therapy groups. The unit can anticipate and detect learning difficulties among children who have problems socialising.
Dr Renaud-Yang explains that this involves “using emotional techniques to work on children’s social skills.” This helps children to decipher their emotions so that they are able to concentrate better.
As the ones making the decisions, parents are kept regularly informed of their child’s development. As the Minister notes, “parents are active and attentive partners in children’s treatment.”
