Council of Europe: Monaco takes part in 18th Conference of Ministers Responsible for Sport

A delegation* led by the Minister of the Interior Lionel Beffre attended the 18th Conference of Ministers of Sport in Porto, Portugal from 8-10 October 2024 under the banner of the promotion of good governance in sport. The Minister was elected Vice-Chair of the Conference, which brought together the 46 Member States of the Council along with Israel, Morocco, the Holy See and several international sports organisations and associations.

Mr Beffre recalled Monaco’s commitment to the principles of good governance in sports, reflected in a National Council bill on sport currently under review. He said it was an honour to host the next Ministerial Conference, the location of which – Monaco in 2026 – was confirmed at the Conference.

H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince also announced the hosting of this Conference in his speech in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Monaco’s accession to the Council of Europe on 2 October in Strasbourg.

The Principality will chair the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for the second half of 2026 and host several high-level events in both Strasbourg and Monaco. The Council’s Conference of Ministers of Sport will be the centrepiece of Monaco’s Presidency.

Monaco is an active and recognised member of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport of the Council of Europe (EPAS); Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe has chaired the Governing Board of this Agreement since 2016.

*The Minister was accompanied by H.E. Mr Gabriel Revel, Ambassador and Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe; Florian Botto (First Secretary) and Ninon Dana-Hattab (Head) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
