United Nations: Celebrating International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
This year, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was celebrated with a digital campaign on social media. Huge numbers of messages were posted, including on accounts belonging to the Principality’s Permanent Representation, the United Nations Secretary-General, H.E. Mr António Guterres, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in addition to those posted by the International Olympic Committee and numerous partners (sporting organisations, NGOs, other permanent representations, athletes and private individuals).
The main messages of the campaign are focused on the role of sport in the post-pandemic recovery, team spirit, solidarity, resilience and fair and equitable access to vaccines to enable sporting activity to resume.
In parallel, to mark the campaign Monaco’s Permanent Representation to the United Nations had the opportunity to test ActiVSeven Heptathlon, a heptathlon game for smartphones and tablets produced by Monaco-based Shibuya Productions. The app, which is used in conjunction with a smart device that was also invented in the Principality, enables users to complete physical exercises based on rhythm, variable strength and precision, all while having some fun.
Once again this year, Monaco’s Permanent Representation has played an important role in celebrating this day, as well as in preparations for the campaign, working in partnership with the United Nations Department of Global Communications, Department of Economic and Social Affairs and Office for Partnerships, and with the World Health Organization. The format has enabled the campaign to reach a vast audience, much larger than the usual audience for an in-person event.
