On 12 July 2018, H.E. Ms Isabelle Picco, Monaco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Mr Gildo Pallanca Pastor, Monaco’s Consul General in New York, celebrated the anniversary of the accession of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince by organising a round table followed by a reception in the United Nations General Assembly building.

The President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Mr Miroslav Lajčák, honoured the event with his presence, and a panel of high-level personalities, moderated by former Formula 1 driver Mr David Coulthard, brought together the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety and President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Mr Jean Todt, Founder and CEO of FIA Formula E Mr Alejandro Agag, Team Principal for the Venturi Formula E team Ms Susie Wolff, and Venturi Formula E team driver Mr Felipe Massa.

The event included a preview of Venturi’s second-generation Formula E car in a presentation demonstrating the contribution of sport, and particularly motor sport, to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development set to take place from 9 to 20 July under the theme Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies, the discussions highlighted recent progress on clean energy (SDG 7) and sustainable cities (SDG 11) made as a result of the Formula E championship.

In her opening speech, H.E. Ms Picco emphasised the actions the Principality is taking to meet the target set by H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. She also noted the recent launch of the National Energy Transition Pact and focused on the critical role of technological innovation, a vital component of Monegasque policy in all aspects of development. The personalities attending the event were unanimous in highlighting the commitment of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and his government to developing cutting-edge technology, particularly in the field of soft mobility.

The very large number of guests at the reception then enjoyed a Monegasque-themed cocktail party featuring barbajuans, pissaladière and Monegasque beer.
