The Principality of Monaco took part in the Ministerial Conference on Marine Litter and Plastic Pollution held in Geneva on 1 and 2 September 2021.

The main goal of the conference, organised by Germany, Ecuador, Ghana and Vietnam, was to build momentum and political will to advance a coherent global strategy to end the environmental scourge of marine litter and plastic pollution. To this end, a ministerial statement was adopted and signed at the end of the conference, setting out the need to conclude a global agreement, under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), covering these issues from all angles, with a focus on production, recycling, reuse and elimination of plastic and plastic waste.

During the high-level dialogue held on 2 September 2021, Monaco’s Permanent Representative expressed the Principality’s support for a comprehensive multilateral solution to the problem of plastic pollution and its desire to see negotiations on this begun as part of the next session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, which will be held from 28 February to 2 March 2022 in Nairobi (Kenya).
