The Principality took part in the 4th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), held at the headquarters of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya from 11 to 15 March 2019.

Ministers of the environment and senior representatives from the 193 UN member states came together for this session of the world’s most important decision-making body for environmental issues in order to identify the major directions of global environmental policy.

This year, the theme “Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production” was at the heart of the discussions. Following the session, a ministerial declaration advocating specific actions in this field was adopted.

The Assembly also adopted a number of thematic resolutions, including one on the sustainable development of coral reefs proposed by Monaco in partnership with Indonesia as co-chairs of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI).

Finally, the session saw Ms Inger Andersen (Denmark), recently elected by the United Nations General Assembly, take up post as Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.
