The exhibition “Christian Bérard, Excentrique Bébé”, presented at Villa Paloma by the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, brings together more than 300 paintings, drawings, photographs and interior designs, exploring the life of Christian Bérard.

The painter, illustrator, set designer, interior decorator, designer of costumes for theatre and cinema and fashion designer, who was affectionately known as “Bébé” by his friends, was a key figure in the art world of the 1930s and 1940s. His many visits to the South of France and particularly to Monaco, where he worked with the Ballets Russes, his propitious meetings with people such as Jean Cocteau, Louis Jouvet, Christian Dior and Gabrielle Chanel, his many collaborations with these major designers and his multidisciplinary approach helped to produce a rich and complex body of work, which visitors will be able to discover across the three floors of the Villa Paloma.

The exhibition’s curator, Célia Bernasconi, who is Chief Curator at the NMNM, interior designer Jacques Grange, who is responsible for the exhibition design, and guest artist Nick Mauss have conceived a display presented in an intimate interior, in a non-chronological order. The exhibition is also not categorised by discipline, but tackles the three major themes in the life and work of the artist: Interiors, the Fabulous and the Mediterranean.
