In December, the Principality's Department of Cultural Affairs is presenting concerts of Baroque music at the Visitation Chapel.
Tuesday 4 December 2018 at 8.30 p. m:
"Tribus Miraculis" by The Gesualdo Six
Owain Park, conductor.
The Gesualdo Six is a vocal sextet, directed by Owain Park. The ensemble showcases early music, in particular the polyphonic repertoire of the Renaissance. It also offers programmes that combine modern works with sacred and secular works. Since its creation in 2014, The Gesualdo Six have given numerous concerts in the United Kingdom and are preparing for further tours and concerts abroad, including Germany. In 2018, the ensemble recorded a CD, English Motets, on Hyperion.
Thursday 6 December 2018, at 8.30 p. m:
"La Spirita" by the Société de Musique Ancienne (Ancient Music Society)
Marie-Claire Bert, recorders – Michel Quagliozzi, recorders – Sibylle Schultz-Carrière, violas de gamba – Etienne Mangot, violas de gamba and cello – Camille Mugot, harpsichord – Michaëla Chétrite, organ.
"This programme begins in the hushed atmosphere that precedes the Nativity, with 14th century composers celebrating the Virgin Mary in anticipation of Jesus' birth. Prayers, meditative and more popular pleasures can be found in the music. Rather than a direct reference to the Nativity that is specific to vocal pieces, here we are creating a poetic path evoked by atmospheres that are joyful or more inward looking, full of hope, love and wonder. Then Jesus is born, and our journey becomes more physical, more human, and above all spiritual, with some great church sonatas from the Baroque repertoire." Marie-Claire Bert
