Joël-Benoît D’Onorio’s book Monaco, monarchie et démocratie (Monaco: Monarchy and Democracy), now in its second edition, was recently awarded a prize by the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.

A constitutionalist, Professor D’Onorio taught public law at the University of Aix-en-Provence for many years. He is an honorary professor of the university and continues to chair its Institut Portalis, which contributes to the education of undergraduate students.

In accordance with long-standing tradition, the distinction was bestowed on the professor beneath the gilded dome of the Institut de France during a magnificent ceremony involving the drummers of the French Republican Guard. The Institut de France groups together all of France’s academies, including the famous Académie Française.

Attendees at the ceremony included representatives of the Monegasque authorities such as Dr Michel-Yves Mourou, Chairman of the Crown Council, Mr Laurent Anselmi, Secretary of Justice and President of the Council of State, and Professor Yves Gaudemet, President of the Higher Committee for Legal Studies in the Principality, and himself a member of the Academy.

Following the ceremony, Professor D’Onorio, whose comprehensive and clear work makes a significant contribution to the understanding of Monegasque institutions, received warm congratulations from numerous attendees, including those from Monaco, Aix-en-Provence and elsewhere.
