Annual bitter orange harvest
Starting on 13 January 2025, gardeners from the Department of Urban Amenities will be undertaking the annual harvest of the Principality’s bitter orange trees.
In 2024, the Principality recorded 1,111 citrus trees (orange, lemon, clementine, etc.), 516 of which are untreated bitter orange trees.
Every year, during January and February, the Department of Urban Amenities’ gardeners prune the various fruit trees and harvest the bitter oranges that grow on the trees lining the various thoroughfares in the Condamine, Moneghetti and Monte-Carlo districts.
Anyone who would like to enjoy some of this annual bitter orange harvest may approach the gardeners on the streets.
In 2024, 4.45 tonnes of fruit, from the 11.14 tonnes harvested, were distributed to local people free of charge, as well as to Lycée Rainier III for making fruit jellies and jam.
The gardeners will be harvesting the bitter oranges in accordance with the following schedule (between 8 am and 2.30 pm, depending on the weather and progress of the harvest):
- Condamine Sector:
13 to 24 January: Rue Princesse Caroline
28 January to 7 February: Rue Grimaldi
- Moneghetti Sector:
20 to 31 January: Boulevard de Belgique
- Monte-Carlo Sector:
13 to 17 January: Avenue de Grande-Bretagne
20 to 24 January: Boulevard d’Italie
