Establishing the Principality’s borders

The Seven Years’ War against England did not directly threaten the integrity of the Principality. Nevertheless, France was weakened by this war and was not in a position to support the Principality any more in the ancient conflict concerning the establishment of borders with La Turbie. Long and difficult negotiations with the king of Sardinia led, in 1760, to the definitive establishment of the border. However, the border fell short of the land which was previously owned by Monaco, which had spread much further to the West and to the North. This could have explained why the Prince was granted less coastal land. The boundary marking which followed this delimitation established the current borders.
