Monaco at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP 16): a strengthened commitment to the implementation of the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework

A delegation of the Principality of Monaco composed of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Department of the Environment is actively taking part in the Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) which began on 21 October in Cali, Colombia and closes on 1 November.

The main objective of COP 16 is to monitor progress in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in 2022 with the following ambitious targets to reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030:

• Conserve 30% of land, waters and seas by 2030.
• Restore 30% of all degraded ecosystems.
• Reduce the introduction of invasive alien species by 50%.
• Reduce pressures on biodiversity such as pollution and sustainably manage natural resources

During the sessions of the Conference, States report on the national policies implemented to achieve these targets and agree on financial mechanisms and resource mobilisation to support conservation efforts, in developing countries in particular.

Throughout COP 16, the Principality of Monaco will reaffirm its commitment to biodiversity conservation and its willingness to contribute to international efforts to meet the objectives of the Global Framework.

This commitment is illustrated at the highest level by the attendance of Ms Caron-Dagioni, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development. In speeches alongside the 115 ministers and other representatives of the 195 States in attendance, Ms Caron-Dagioni highlighted the Government’s efforts in implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework across Monaco. One example was the National Biodiversity Strategy, which has been amended to align its currently implemented measures with the Global Framework targets, in accordance with commitments made by H.S.H. Prince Albert II ––regarding the Sustainable Development Goals, for example–– on the international political stage.
