United Nations – Monaco chairs meeting on ocean observing
The 22nd meeting of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea was held from 6 to 9 June 2022, co-chaired by H.E. Ms Isabelle PICCO, Monaco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, and her counterpart from Tonga, H.E. Mr Viliami VA'INGA TONE.
This is the third time that H.E. Ms Isabelle PICCO has co-chaired this meeting, whose theme this year was “ocean observing”.
Experts demonstrated that innovation and technological progress are delivering improved knowledge about the state of the ocean, its resources and the marine environment as a whole. Nonetheless, it was clear from the discussions that a better understanding of the processes associated with the acquisition and sharing of data, strengthened cooperation and long-term support are required to ensure that political decisions are based entirely on scientific studies.
